Tittlescreen Editing Easy metod: Hello all, here is a much easier way to edit the title screen Adapted from another tutorial originally posted by MeanMrMustard back in the day. Let's get started. Step 1: First, let's assemble the tools we'll need.
For this tutorial, we will really only need TLP and a Hex Editor, as well as a pointer calculator if that's the way you roll when it comes to getting pointers. You will also need your rom, and to make life easier, the image attached to this post.
Step 2: On to actual edting! If you notice in the tile viewer, the titlescreen graphics are actually loaded from 2 separate locations. Since this is still a Pokemon game, you probably won't be changing the logo anyway, so we will only be repointing the second half of the graphics. What you want to do is open your rom in TLP, and find some blank space between 98BF0 and F0 where we can import an image.
In this tutorial, we will be placing it at 98BF0. So when you are at your location, simply go to "Edit" then "Import Bitmap" and tell it to load the image that was attached to this post, and save it. Now, open your rom in the hex editor and go to 62C0.
You will see "21 00 40". This is the pointer to the old graphics. Well, we want it to point to our new graphics instead, so we will replace the pointer. The pointer to our address is 26 F0 4B, but we only need the last 2 bytes of that. So change the bytes at 62C0 to read "21 F0 4B". Now it will point to the new graphics we inserted! Let's go ahead and save it.
Now is a good time to test it out. Open your rom up and look at the title screen. It should show the normal titlescreen, except the version text will be gone.
This is what we want. Step 3: Open your rom up in TLP again, and this time edit the tiles to show your version name there. You can change whatever else you like as well, for example you could change the clouds to be tree tops or something, for example.
If you change it to something else, you will want to edit the pallet for that part of the screen so it will match, but you get the idea. At some point, I'll try to explain the proper way to repoint and edit the bird as well. This is a very important skill to learn, as you will need to use it quite often. In this tutorial, we will be adding a new person and house to Pallet Town. With your rom loaded, open the Map Properties dialogue as shown in the attatched screenshot.
You will notice in the area I've highlighted that there are two pointers: The map pointer and the event pointer. Make note of these. The last two byte of these are shown backwards in Goldmap, so the actual pointers are 2A for the map and 4E AA47 for the events. Go to the address Goldmap says the events are at, and scroll down until you find free space. I'll be putting mine at 0x13A Enter that address into pointer berechner to find the pointer.
The pointer to my new address is 4E Notice I didn't swap these, as unlike Goldmap, pointer berechner shows them properly. Open your rom in your hex editor and do a search for the map pointer. Remember, Goldmap shows the last two byte of the pointer backwards. You need to swap the last two bytes before you search for them. Do a search for the 3 bytes of the map pointer followed immediately by the first byte of the Event Pointer.
This has taken us into the map header. You will notice that there are two more bytes between the first byte of the event pointer and the last two we saw in Goldmap. These point to the map script, so we ignore them for now. Take the pointer you found in step two and type the last two bytes of it over the ones for the old event data.
In my case, I typed over AA Save your rom with a new name so you have the original as a backup. You'll see why in the next step. You've just repointed the event data! Reload your rom and go to the map you repointed the events for. You will notice it loads no events on the map.
This is what it is supposed to do, as there is no data there yet. In a seperate instance of Goldmap, load the old rom.
This is just for comparison. It will say 0 for every type. Enter here however many you need. In this tutorial, we are adding a person and a warp. So we will enter 4 warps, 0 Triggers, 4 Signposts, and 3 People.
Press OK. Now this will cause it to pop up with a warning, but ignore it and press OK agan. To save future headaches, make sure the warps have the same number as the old ones when you put them back on doors. The numbers on people arent usually as important to keep the same. As this is not a tutorial explaining scripting, we will make the new person just be a clone of the fat man below Oak's lab, so we will give him the same data as the fat man.
You just added new events to a map! Animations Ever wanted to change some of the animated tiles, or maybe the animation of the cut tree or the headbutt tree to match your new graphics? Now you can! Just go to these locations in TLP and edit them all you want! Note that on the flower animation, it appears to have 4 frames, but only 2 seem to be used.
They are the frames that look to be in full colour. Basically, they are a list of the attacks taught by each TM in order. Pretty straight forward. This is how I made it always day in SaR.
If a sprite is used that is not in the list, it will show up as the player during normal gameplay. To add a sprite to a sheet, you will have to replace one already in the list. Also, spritesheets are only reloaded when you enter a map through a warp, not via a connection. This is part of why the game uses Routegates. You may need to place a sprite in more than one spritesheet to get it to always show up properly in the game. Now you can too!
Simply repoint the font to a stretch of blank space, and insert it in TLP. You will want to change it to 2Bpp so the game will load it as a 4-colour graphic, instead of a 2-colour graphic as it does by default. For triggers to work, the map has to be listed in this table, so the game knows what trigger timing they are on. The easiest way to fix this is of course to replace one of the maps in the list that you don't plan on having triggers on anymore.
Like say you didn't need the triggers on Route 29 anymore that show you how to catch Pokemon, you could easily overwrite that map to add them to your other map. Trainers xA6 - How many trainer groups x - Pointer table to trainer pictures xE - Pointer table to where trainer data starts. You could repoint the trainer groups for gym leaders, allowing them to have multiple entries so you could script rematches with them, or if you wanted to change their name to be longer or give them more Pokemon than they had to begin with.
Just repoint it to a blank space in the same bank there's plenty of room to write a new name and type whatever name you wish, followed by x Simple as that. Lowercase me! Handy for those of you replacing Pokemon in your hack.
Be careful and make a backup before doing this, since if the picture ends up being larger when compressed than the old one it may overwrite something. I haven't yet found the pointers to insert these properly, but I will update this when I do. Lets you edit the map of the player's room without having stairs and the bed magically show up where they normally would, has the downside of not letting you change them with the PC.
